Drawing from Daguerreotypes

Sketching around with pencils and Vidalon. I know you are probably asking what is a daguerreotype? It is a really accurate old fashioned photograph that predates the old black and white photos we know of from the civil war time. It is a process that involves a light-sensitive silver-coated metallic plate. I am unsure of the whole process, but the images are very sharp and not washed out. These daguerreotype images are from the 1840's from Bill Whitaker's studio. It was a great exercise and a fun study.

I went with our scouts to Goblin Valley in Southern Utah this weekend. What a trip. It was a lot of fun running around in a slot canyon and seeing all the interesting rock formations in Goblin Valley.

Give her what she really wants, some peace and quiet with a little rest! Introducing the Get Out of Work Cards 2010. I recommend print these little jewels out on cardstock and using a metal ring to clasp them together. Let me know what you think and how it went.

Last night my wife and I took a little field trip to the Springville Museum of Art to visit the Children’s Illustration display for the second time. If you have not yet gone to see the show, go today. It is only up until Dec. 28. It is worth your time. There are some real gems there that I just love. We have pictured here a Greg Newbold, Hala Whitwer, a Bob Barrett, a Brett Helquist, and one of my favorites a Guy Francis.

It was really great to see the work of so many of the people I know and have had for teachers.

My schedule has been interesting balancing work, a children's book, and some academic drawings. "Walking the Halls"
My Mom tells me that when she first found out the news she was completely overwhelmed. I mean, you can imagine. Your little girl was just pronounced with a 30% chance to live. That's very difficult to live with. She tells me she would walk the hospital hall feeling and hearing the words to the primary song, "I Feel My Savior's Love", that song filled her with the comfort that she needed at that time to handle the situation.

"Walking Again"
And so when I first got up and leaned on the walker. Than my legs were shaking and turning purple and blue and my palms were sweating and it was a lot of work even just to stand up. I mean I hadn't stood for six months. So I hadn't used my muscles at all and all of sudden I was using them. Additionally I had an experimental bone graft and two screws in my hip instead of a hip. So the question was will I be able to use my leg. Will I be able to walk.

"The New Dress"
When you are living on a cancer floor, then you learn about death. You learn that life can be taken away like that. One time there was a little girl who got a new dress. I remember watching her run up and down the hallway showing off the new dress. The next day something happened with her heart and she died. You get a close up look at death, I guess at dying. You realize that you really feel that it is a battleground and that not everyone makes it. So you are grateful for every day that you have. Strive to find things to smile about.

"The Gift Shop"
It was now the second time Chante was diagnosed with cancer. All of this before the age of 10. Her grieving father took Chante to the hospital gift shop and told her to pick out anything that she wanted. Across the way on a shelf amongst all the other toys sat a simple doll with button eyes. Upon returning home the doll was the silent way of telling Chante's mother that the cancer was back. It was a difficult time to say the least.

"The Window"
Even living in that battleground I was able to find things to smile about. Going to the hospital basement to practice the piano, or going to the playroom to dance with a giant teddy bear. Then there was the window. I loved looking out the window at the city skyline, and the city lights I had a perfect view of the state capitol. At nighttime when it was all lit up, its big dome roof it looked just like a castle. My mom and I would talk about it and she would tell me stories. She promised to take me on a tour of the castle someday.

"The Grave Yard"
That weekend when I first received the news of my diagnosis. I went to the Mantua graveyard because it is beautiful there, and it is quiet and I could be alone. I was sitting there with my head down, and crying and praying a prayer full of questions that I didn't have answers to. As I was praying the thought came to me to look up. So I did. With my eyes still closed I could feel the sunlight on my face. Then I felt the words at the same time, what do you know. The impression came to focus on that.

Here are a couple of sketches that I am working on along with my bfa. This story is about an amazing girl who is a two time cancer survivor. Here are some glorified thumbnails to show what will be coming soon. I will give more details on the story when everything is finished and sent in. I don't want to ruin the documentary.

#1 The young mother walking the halls after she finds out that her 3 year old has cancer.

#2 After removing part of her leg the young girl is determined to walk again.

#3 (Rejected piece.) There is another girl in that part of the hospital that is sick too. She gets a new dress and runs up and down the hall with it on as little girls do. The next day she passes on. Kathy came up with this concept of an empty hospital bed with a new dress draped on it. (I think it was still a good idea)

#3 Here is a quick sketch of the little girl running the halls in her new dress. I think this one will be a lot of fun to do.

#4. (needed work) After being in remission for three years the young girl is diagnosed with cancer again. Some where along the line she had a 30% chance of living. This is a view of part of the gift shop in the hospital where he dad let her pick out anything that she wanted. She loved that doll that was on the far off shelf.

#4 I think the newer version is much better than the last. The light casting down on the doll is going to be really fun to do.

#5 Looking out of her window at night she could see a castle lit up at night that turned out to be great motivation for her to get through the chemo.

#6 At age 27 she is still fighting the battle and going strong.

The Super Market is one of the greatest inventions as compared to hunting and gathering. Here is a little mix of both. I think the TAR TAR sauce sign in the back adds a nice touch to this fish stick hunter.
